In the Philippine entertainment industry, there are several award-giving bodies; these are usually treated equally hence it is rare that all award-giving bodies will agree on a consensus performance for a single category. In times where there is a consensus winner, or all award-giving bodies are (almost) unanimous in a single category, that person is said to have won the grand slam.
Until 1982, only the Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences Award or FAMAS, the Gawad Urian Awards, and the Catholic Mass Media Awards were the only award-giving bodies, and actors were content on receiving one trophy every year. In 1982, the Film Academy of the Philippines (FAP) awarded their own award, and on the following year, Vilma Santos became the first recipient of the grand slam, with her performance at Relasyon. This was the birth of the use of the term "grand slam" in Philippine entertainment. The Best Actress category has been the most sought after among the categories.[1]
